Conservation Agriculture

Precision, Genetic and Holistic Farming Approaches

Conservation agriculture, as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is a farming system meant to prevent the loss of arable land while regenerating land that is already degraded, built on three practices: minimum disturbance of the soil, meaning no-till farming, maintaining permanent soil cover, and diversifying the plant species grown. As global population growth raises the pressure to produce more food every year, conservation agriculture is sometimes supported through conservation programs and agricultural legislation such as the United States Farm Bill.

  • Lead section, paragraph 1
Conservation Agriculture (CA) is a farming system that can prevent losses of arable land while regenerating degraded lands. It promotes minimum soil disturbance (i.e. no-till farming), maintenance of a permanent soil cover, and diversification of plant species.
  • Key principles section, minimum soil disturbance passage
The first key principle in CA is practicing minimum soil disturbance which is essential to maintaining minerals within the soil, stopping erosion, and preventing water loss from occurring within the soil.
  • Key principles section, permanent soil cover passage
The principle of managing the top soil to create a permanent organic soil cover can allow for growth of organisms within the soil structure.
  • Key principles section, soil erosion passage
Tilling of soil can cause severe erosion and crusting which leads to a decrease in soil fertility.
  • Problems section, adoption challenges passage
CA has not spread as quickly as most conservationists would like.
  • Key principles section, no-till and soil organic levels passage
No-till farming has caught on as a process that can save soil organic levels for a longer period and still allow the soil to be productive for longer periods.
  • Key principles section, crop rotation and disease control passage
Crop rotation can be used best as a disease control against other preferred crops.
  • Benefits section, biodiversity passage
Since agriculture is one of the most destructive forces against biodiversity, CA can change the way humans produce food and energy.
  • Definition section, FAO three principles passage
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has determined that conservation agriculture (CA) has three key principles.
  • Key principles section, soil organism habitat passage
Minimum soil disturbance also conserves soil micro and macro-organism habitats that are commonly destroyed in conventional ploughing practices.
  • Key principles section, mulch breakdown passage
The breaking down of this mulch will produce a high organic matter level which will act as a fertilizer for the soil surface.
  • Problems section, transition cost passage
The process of CA takes time; when a producer first becomes a conservationist, the results can be a financial loss to them.

  • Associated With: Soil Organic Matter, Benefits section, organic matter passage
Within fields that are controlled by CA the producer will see an increase in organic matter.
  • Associated With: Mulching, Key principles section, permanent soil cover, mulching sentence
The presence of mulching also reduce the velocity of runoff and the impact of rain drops thus reducing soil erosion and runoff.

What is Conservation Agriculture? (FAO)
  • Overview section, What is Conservation Agriculture? opening definition paragraph
Conservation Agriculture (CA) is a farming system that can prevent losses of arable land while regenerating degraded lands.
  • Overview section, principles summary passage
It promotes maintenance of a permanent soil cover, minimum soil disturbance, and diversification of plant species.
  • Overview section, biodiversity and water and nutrient use efficiency passage
It enhances biodiversity and natural biological processes above and below the ground surface, which contribute to increased water and nutrient use efficiency and to improved and sustained crop production.
  • Overview section, soil interventions passage
Soil interventions such as mechanical soil disturbance are reduced to an absolute minimum or avoided
  • Associated With: Agricultural Biodiversity, Overview section, biodiversity and biological processes passage
It enhances biodiversity and natural biological processes above and below the ground surface, which contribute to increased water and nutrient use efficiency and to improved and sustained crop production.
  • Associated With: Nutrient Cycling, Overview section, biodiversity and nutrient use efficiency sentence
It enhances biodiversity and natural biological processes above and below the ground surface, which contribute to increased water and nutrient use efficiency and to improved and sustained crop production.
  • Associated With: Agronomy, Overview section, good agronomy and land husbandry passage
CA facilitates good agronomy, such as timely operations, and improves overall land husbandry for rainfed and irrigated production.

  • Minimum Mechanical Soil Disturbance section, opening definition
Minimum soil disturbance refers to low disturbance no-tillage and direct seeding.
  • Species Diversification section, rotation and association passage
Rotation/association should involve at least 3 different crop species.
