Nutrient cycling is the movement of nutrients, principally nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, through the soil, plants, animals and atmosphere of a farming system, as plants take nutrients up, animals and decomposers return them to the soil, and some nutrients are lost to leaching, runoff or the air. A farming system's own nutrient balance, how much it recycles internally against how much it must import as fertilizer or manure and how much it loses, is a basic measure of its long-term sustainability.
