Agricultural runoff is the water that flows off farmland, carrying with it a load of sediment, fertilizer nutrients, pesticides and animal waste picked up from fields, feedlots or pastures, into nearby streams, rivers, lakes and groundwater. It is the primary pathway by which farming affects water quality downstream, and its nutrient load, phosphorus and nitrogen especially, is the main driver of the eutrophication of receiving waters.
