Plant Pathology

The scientists who study the diseases, pests and pathogens of crop plants and the methods used to control them, including plant disease diagnosis and epidemiology, disease-resistant variety development framed primarily around a pathogen, fungicide and pesticide research, the biological control and integrated pest management of crop-damaging insects, and the entomologists whose work protects crops and stored produce from pest loss. Gathered together because plant pathology as a discipline is taught and practiced as a single applied field spanning fungal, bacterial, viral and insect threats to agriculture, distinct from Plant Breeding and Genetics, which gathers figures whose defining achievement is the crop variety itself rather than the pathogen or pest it resists.
