Edward Fred Knipling (1909 to 2000) was an American entomologist who, with his longtime colleague Raymond C. Bushland, received the 1992 World Food Prize for developing the sterile insect technique for eradicating or suppressing insect pests that threaten livestock and crops. He was best known as the inventor of the sterile insect technique, and the New York Times Magazine reported in 1970 that some scientists credited him with the single most original thought in insect control of the twentieth century.
