Friedrich Carl Louis Otto Appel, born May 19, 1867, and died November 10, 1952, was a German botanist and agriculturalist who became a leading authority on potato diseases. He developed a successful seed potato inspection program in Germany and directed the Biological Reich Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Berlin-Dahlem from 1920 to 1933, after joining its predecessor organization at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin in 1899.
