Jonathan D. G. Jones

Jonathan Dallas George Jones is a British geneticist, born in 1954, a Fellow of the Royal Society who works at the Sainsbury Laboratory and the University of East Anglia using molecular and genetic methods to study plant disease resistance. With Jeffery Dangl he co-developed the zigzag model describing the coevolutionary arms race between plant resistance genes and pathogen effector proteins, and he separately proposed the guard hypothesis, which explains how a plant with a limited number of defensive proteins can still detect a wide range of pathogen attacks, and showed that a plant's two main layers of immune detection work together rather than independently.
