Monilinia fructigena

Monilinia fructigena is a fungal plant pathogen that causes brown rot, a fruit decay affecting apples, pears, plums, peaches and cherries. Infections established during fruit development often stay hidden until the fruit ripens, when small circular brown spots appear and spread rapidly across the flesh. The disease is a substantial economic threat to commercial orchards, spreading through wind-borne spores and insect vectors, and integrated management combining fungicides with cultural controls is used to reduce infection rates.
