Infections established during fruit development often stay hidden until the fruit ripens, when small circular brown spots appear and spread rapidly across the flesh. The disease is a substantial economic threat to commercial orchards, spreading through wind-borne spores and insect vectors, and integrated management combining fungicides with cultural controls is used to reduce infection rates.
