The CGIAR center for farming in the world's dry areas, founded in 1977 at Tel Hadya outside Aleppo, Syria, and relocated to Beirut in 2012 when the Syrian civil war made Aleppo untenable. It works on crop varieties, water harvesting, conservation agriculture and integrated crop and livestock systems for the resource-poor of the dry belt. Its Aleppo genebank is the reason the Svalbard vault has been drawn on: ICARDA made the first withdrawal in the vault's history to rebuild its collection abroad.
