One of the first grains ever domesticated, alongside wheat in the Fertile Crescent. Hardier than wheat in cold, drought and salty soil, barley was the bread grain of the ancient poor and the ration of Roman soldiers, and survives today chiefly as animal feed and as malt, the foundation of beer and whisky.
