Farming in water: the controlled raising of fish, crustaceans, mollusks and algae, husbandry's youngest large branch and its fastest-growing one. In 2022 farmed production passed wild capture for the first time, and by 2024 aquaculture supplied 103 million tonnes of aquatic animals, more than half of world output and nearly six tenths of what people actually eat from the water. The domestication story every land chapter of this atlas tells is happening in ponds and pens now, within living memory.
