Blue Revolution

The Blue Revolution is the rapid expansion of aquaculture, farmed fish, shellfish and aquatic plant production, from the mid-twentieth century onward, that has made farmed aquatic species a major and fast-growing share of the world's seafood supply, paralleling the role the Green Revolution played for staple crops on land. It has drawn both credit for relieving pressure on wild fish stocks and criticism for its own environmental costs, including habitat conversion, water pollution and disease spread in intensive fish and shrimp farming.
