Crop plants whose DNA has been altered by genetic engineering rather than by crossing alone. The first commercially grown GM food crop was the Flavr Savr tomato of 1994, and adoption since has been fast and uneven: from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 185.1 million in 2016, about 12 percent of global cropland, concentrated in a handful of crops and countries. The technology's safety record and its corporate control are argued in different registers, and the argument itself is part of the subject.
