Gene Revolution

The Gene Revolution is the wave of agricultural biotechnology, principally genetically modified and, more recently, gene-edited crop varieties, that followed the classical Green Revolution from the 1990s onward, aiming to raise yield, pest and herbicide resistance or nutritional content through direct genetic modification rather than through conventional cross-breeding and input packages alone. Its adoption and its politics have run very differently region to region, widely embraced in the Americas and much of Asia, far more restricted in the European Union, and it remains, like the Green Revolution before it, a genuinely contested rather than uniformly welcomed transformation.
