Marc Van Montagu, born in 1933 in Ghent, is a Belgian molecular biologist who directed the Laboratory of Genetics at Ghent University. With his colleague Jozef Schell he discovered the gene transfer mechanism between Agrobacterium bacteria and plants, work that led to methods for turning Agrobacterium into a delivery system for plant genetic engineering and to the creation of the first transgenic crops. He went on to found the biotech companies Plant Genetic Systems and CropDesign and later established International Plant Biotechnology Outreach to bring biotechnology to agriculture in Africa.
