System of Rice Intensification

Precision, Genetic and Holistic Farming Approaches

The System of Rice Intensification, or SRI, is a farming methodology that aims to increase the yield of rice while using fewer resources and reducing environmental impact, by changing how plants, soil, water and nutrients are managed rather than by relying on new varieties or heavy inputs. It was developed by the French Jesuit Father Henri de Laulanié in Madagascar, building on decades of agricultural experimentation there. Millions of smallholder farmers, particularly across Asia and Africa, have adopted the method, though its spread has been limited mainly by a lack of awareness and training.
