Pseudocercosporella capsellae

Fungal Diseases of Crops

Pseudocercosporella capsellae is an ascomycete fungus in the family Mycosphaerellaceae, formally described in 1973. It is the causal agent of white leaf spot disease, which affects crucifer crops including canola, rapeseed, mustard and other Brassica species, and can occasionally infect cover crops and weeds as secondary hosts. The fungus produces chains of narrow, septate conidia and generates a purple-pink pigment along with the toxin cercosporin, which increases its virulence. It behaves as a hemibiotroph, keeping host tissue alive until a severe infection causes leaves to drop, and white leaf spot causes economically significant yield losses in canola and rapeseed production worldwide.
