Albugo candida

Albugo candida is an oomycete, a water mold rather than a true fungus, though it is commonly known as white rust because of the white or cream colored pustules it raises on infected plant tissue. It is an obligate pathogen that primarily attacks plants in the mustard family, including the rapeseed mustard group of crops and many wild brassicas, and several distinct races of the pathogen each specialize on different host species. The disease has a worldwide distribution across the main cruciferous crop growing regions, excluding some northern and isolated areas, and beyond the direct damage it causes, an infection weakens plants and predisposes them to a secondary oomycete disease, downy mildew, compounding the losses. Because its genome is comparatively compact for an oomycete, the species has also become a model organism used in genomic research into this group of pathogens.
