A fungal disease (Botrytis cinerea) with an exceptionally broad host range that attacks flowers, fruit and stored produce in crops from grapes and strawberries to lettuce and roses, producing a characteristic gray fuzzy spore mass on decaying tissue. It causes substantial postharvest losses worldwide, though under specific conditions on ripening wine grapes the same fungus, known there as noble rot, is deliberately encouraged to concentrate sugars for sweet dessert wines such as Sauternes and Tokaji.
