Phytophthora cambivora

Phytophthora cambivora is an oomycete plant pathogen that causes ink disease in European chestnut, Castanea sativa, leading to wilting and tree death. The disease has been present in Europe since the eighteenth century, with major epidemics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and a resurgence since the 1990s that has caused high chestnut mortality in Portugal, Italy and France. Since the 1990s its host range has widened to include golden chinquapin in Oregon, rhododendron and pieris in North Carolina, noble fir in Norway, and beech in Italy and Germany, and the organism appears to be a hybrid of currently unknown parentage.
