Glomerella cingulata

Glomerella cingulata is a fungal plant pathogen whose asexual stage, more commonly encountered in the field, is known as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. It causes anthracnose and fruit rot diseases, producing water soaked, sunken spots on fruit that turn necrotic as the infection develops along with small dark lesions on leaves, and it has an unusually broad host range spanning cereals, grasses, legumes, fruits, vegetables, perennial crops and trees, including mangoes, strawberries, chestnuts and durian. In Chinese strawberry production, this fungus and its close relatives have been reported to cause up to eighty percent plant loss in nurseries and more than forty percent yield loss in the field, representing substantial economic damage, which makes it a serious concern for growers of susceptible crops around the world.
