An aphid-transmitted virus that causes ring-shaped spots on papaya fruit, mottled leaves and, in severe cases, plant death, and that nearly ended commercial papaya production on the Hawaiian island of Oahu by the 1990s. The threat was countered by one of the first widely commercialized applications of genetic engineering in a food crop, a papaya variety carrying a gene from the virus itself that confers resistance, approved in Hawaii in 1998 and credited with saving the state's papaya industry.
