A group of related whitefly transmitted viruses that cause mottled, distorted leaves and stunted growth in cassava, a staple root crop for several hundred million people across Africa. Severe epidemics, including a pandemic of unusually virulent recombinant strains that swept East Africa from the late 1980s, have at times cut regional cassava production by more than half and contributed to localized food insecurity.

African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV), East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV), and South African cassava mosaic virus (SACMV) are distinct circular single-stranded DNA viruses which are transmitted by whiteflies and primarily infect cassava plants; these have thus far only been reported from Africa.
