A Scottish breed of beef cattle named for the Galloway region of Scotland, where it originated during the seventeenth century. Usually black, of average size, naturally polled and carrying a thick coat suited to Scotland's harsh climate, the Galloway is reared mainly for beef; in 2022 it was reported by twenty-three countries with a worldwide population of about 26,800 head, most concentrated in Northern Europe and led by Denmark and Germany.
