Walter Russell Shaw

Walter Russell Shaw was a Prince Edward Island politician whose career, spanning agricultural extension work, journalism, farming and politics, was aimed throughout at the betterment of agriculture on the island. His development of school fairs, boys and girls calf clubs and young men's heifer clubs led directly to the establishment of the 4-H movement in Prince Edward Island, and he was responsible for launching the PEI Federation of Agriculture, serving as its General Secretary as well as Director of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. He went on to serve as Premier of Prince Edward Island from 1959 to 1966. Shaw was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1980, and said afterward that he counted that induction as the most gratifying of all the awards he received.
