Alphonso Michael Espy, born November 30, 1953, is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 25th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1993 to 1994, the first African American and the first person from the Deep South to hold the office. Before his cabinet appointment he represented Mississippi's 2nd congressional district in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993. He later ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate from Mississippi in 2018 and 2020.
