Karl Nikolaus Fraas, born in 1810 near Bamberg and died in 1875, was a German botanist and agriculturist who earned his doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1834 and went on to serve as a professor of agriculture and direct veterinary colleges in Bavaria. His agricultural science work included fertilizer experiments and the invention of the lysimeter, a device for measuring water and nutrient movement through soil, establishing him as a major figure in nineteenth-century agricultural science.
