John Henry Pope

John Henry Pope was a Canadian farmer, lumberman, railway entrepreneur and politician, born 19 December 1819 in Eaton Township, Lower Canada, and died in office 1 April 1889. He represented Compton County in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1857 to 1867 and was elected to the first Canadian Parliament in 1867 as a Liberal-Conservative. He served two separate terms as Minister of Agriculture, from 25 October 1871 to 5 November 1873 and again from 17 October 1878 to 25 September 1885, while also serving as Minister of Railways and Canals; his son Rufus Henry took his House seat after his death.
