The Illinois blacksmith who in 1837 shaped a polished steel plough that scoured clean in the sticky prairie soil that clogged every iron one. The self-cleaning steel plough opened the Midwest to grain farming, and the company Deere founded to make it remains the world's largest farm equipment maker, still under his name.
