Jean-Charles Chapais was a Canadian Conservative politician, born 2 December 1811 in Riviere-Ouelle, Quebec, and died 17 July 1885, considered a Father of Canadian Confederation for his participation in the Quebec Conference that determined the form of Canada's government. A successful farmer and merchant, he became in 1845 the first mayor of Saint-Denis-de-la-Bouteillerie, and he served as Canada's first Minister of Agriculture from Confederation on 1 July 1867 until 15 November 1869.
