Harry William Hays was a Canadian rancher, auctioneer and politician who served as Minister of Agriculture in the government of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson after an earlier career as the 27th mayor of Calgary from 1959 to 1963. His agricultural background ran deep: he developed the Hays Converter, a beef cattle breed he created through a program of crossbreeding aimed at combining the best traits of several established breeds, and as agriculture minister he championed the Dairy Commission Act and an expansion of federal crop insurance. After losing his parliamentary seat in 1965 he was appointed to the Canadian Senate, representing Alberta until his death in 1982.
