Hans Rudolf Herren, born in 1947, is a Swiss American entomologist, farmer and development specialist who was the first Swiss recipient of the World Food Prize, awarded in 1995 for leading a major biological pest management campaign in Africa that successfully fought the cassava mealybug and averted a food crisis that could have claimed an estimated 20 million lives. He later served as Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi, Kenya, from 1994 to 2005, and co-founded the Swiss foundation Biovision.
