David Lobell

David B. Lobell is the Gloria and Richard Kushel Director of the Center on Food Security and the Environment and a professor of Earth system science at Stanford University, where he has been on the faculty since 2009 after earning his doctorate there in 2005 and completing a fellowship at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His research investigates the impact of climate change on crop yields and global food security, and his landmark 2011 paper in Science, Climate Trends and Global Crop Production Since 1980, demonstrated that warming since 1980 had already reduced global maize production by 3.8 percent and wheat production by 5.5 percent relative to what would have occurred without climate change. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013 for his use of underutilized data sources to investigate climate change's effect on crop production, and the National Academy of Sciences Prize in Food and Agriculture Sciences in 2022.
