Agricultural communication is the study and practice of communicating agriculture related information among agricultural stakeholders and between agricultural and non-agricultural audiences, covering a definition of agriculture that reaches beyond farming itself to food, fiber, animals, rural life and natural resources. Practitioners act as science communicators who carry specialized agricultural knowledge that a general interest journalist is not expected to hold, working through extension programs, education and private communication to reach audiences from scientists to ordinary consumers. The field grew out of the widening gap between a shrinking farming population and an increasingly urban public with little firsthand knowledge of how agriculture works.
