Virgilio Onate Gil was a Spanish civil engineer, businessman and politician born in Madrid in 1924 and dying in nearby Aravaca in 1987. Trained in civil works and graduating in 1950, he worked in state administration as Director General of Hydraulic Works before serving as Minister of Agriculture from 1975 to 1976 in Carlos Arias Navarro's government, the first formed after Francisco Franco's death. He later led the National Petroleum Company known as ENPETROL from 1982 and was a member of the Catholic Association of Propagandists.
