Pedro Solbes was a Spanish economist and politician who served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from 1991 to 1993 under Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, before moving to lead the ministry of economy and finance from 1993 to 1996. Although a lifelong member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), he was known for an independent, technocratic style that later led a conservative government to name him European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs from 1999 to 2004, and he went on to serve again as Spain's deputy prime minister and economy minister from 2004 to 2009. He was born in Pinoso, Alicante, in 1942 and died in 2023.
