Loyola de Palacio was a Spanish politician who served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from May 1996 to April 1999 under Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, one of the earliest women to reach senior cabinet rank in Spain's democratic era. A founder of the conservative Popular Alliance, forerunner of the Popular Party, she went on to become vice president of the European Commission from 1999 to 2004, overseeing transport, energy and relations with the European Parliament under President Romano Prodi. She was born in Madrid in 1950 and died in 2006.
