Cereals and Pseudocereals

The grass-family grains grown for their starchy seed (maize, rice, wheat, barley, oat, rye, sorghum and the millets) together with the pseudocereals grown and used the same way despite belonging to other plant families (buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, teff). The two are held under one heading as a browsing convenience: FAO own commodity classification groups pseudocereals with true cereals for exactly this reason, since a reader looking for teff or quinoa expects it beside wheat and rice, not off in a botanically pure but practically obscure group of its own. Belongs here: any crop grown primarily for a dry, starchy grain harvested from the plant own seed head. Does not belong here: a pulse such as chickpea or lentil, whose seed is a legume rather than a grass-family grain, held under Pulses instead.
