Irrigation

Bringing water to crops instead of waiting for rain. Irrigation built the first river civilizations, from Mesopotamian canals to the Nile flood basins, and today waters the fifth of the world's cropland that produces some forty percent of its food, while draining rivers and aquifers in the process. Its methods run from flooded furrows to drip lines and center pivots.
