Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies

Fatal degenerative brain diseases of livestock and deer caused by misfolded prion protein, including scrapie and chronic wasting disease. A disease belongs here when its cited article calls it a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. They have long incubation periods, no treatment and no vaccine, and they are controlled by surveillance, restrictions on animal feed and movement of animals, and culling of affected herds and flocks. This heading gathers the spongiform encephalopathies of the atlas so a visitor can compare the animals each affects and how each is controlled.
