Companion planting is the polycultural practice, used in horticulture and small-scale agriculture, of growing different crops together to provide a measure of weed suppression, pest control and pollination, to attract beneficial insects, to make efficient use of space, and to increase overall crop productivity. It is practiced by farmers and gardeners in both industrialized and developing countries, and many of its modern principles were already present centuries ago in the forest gardens of Asia and thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica; the technique may allow farmers to reduce their reliance on costly artificial fertilizers and pesticides.
