Trichothecium roseum

Fungal Diseases of Crops

Trichothecium roseum is a fungus in the division Ascomycota, first reported in 1809. Its colonies are flat and granular, starting white and developing a light pink color, and it reproduces asexually through conidia with no known sexual state; its conidia form a distinctive zigzag chain that distinguishes it from other Trichothecium species. Found worldwide in habitats from leaf litter to fruit crops, it acts as a secondary and opportunistic pathogen, causing pink rot on a range of fruits and vegetables, and produces secondary metabolites including the mycotoxins roseotoxins and trichothecenes. It has an economic impact on agriculture through spoiled fruit crops, and one of its metabolites, trichothecinol A, is being investigated as a potential anti-metastatic drug.
