A whitefly-transmitted virus that causes severe stunting, upward leaf curling and yellowing in tomato, often reducing yields to near zero when plants are infected while young. First described in the Middle East in the mid twentieth century, it has since spread through the Mediterranean basin, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Americas, tracking the global spread of its whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci, and it is regarded as the most economically damaging virus disease of tomato worldwide.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is a DNA virus from the genus Begomovirus and the family Geminiviridae. TYLCV is one of the most serious diseases affecting tomato plants, especially in tropical and subtropical areas, where it often causes major crop losses.
