A highly contagious viral disease of domestic pigs and wild boar, also known as hog cholera, causing fever, hemorrhages and high mortality in acute infections. Eradicated from North America and much of Western Europe through vaccination and slaughter programs in the twentieth century, it remains endemic in parts of Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, and outbreaks in previously free countries trigger immediate trade bans.
