A bacterial disease of cattle, goats, sheep and pigs that causes abortion, infertility and reduced milk production, and that is also zoonotic, causing a chronic, debilitating fever in humans through contact with infected animals or unpasteurized dairy products. It remains endemic in parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa and Latin America despite decades of vaccination and test and slaughter programs that have eliminated it from much of North America and Western Europe.
