A microscopic kidney-shaped roundworm (Rotylenchulus reniformis) that infests the roots of cotton, soybean, pineapple and many other crops across the tropics, subtropics and the southeastern United States, reducing root function and causing stunting and yield loss often with no distinctive above-ground symptoms. It has displaced root-knot nematode as the dominant nematode pest of cotton across much of the southeastern and mid-southern United States since the late twentieth century, and its ability to survive for extended periods without a host makes crop rotation alone an unreliable control.
