A bacterial disease (Erwinia amylovora) of apple, pear and other pome fruit trees that causes blossoms, shoots and branches to blacken and wilt as though scorched by fire, and can kill young trees outright. Native to North America, it spread to Europe in the twentieth century and remains one of the most destructive diseases in commercial pear and apple production, with no fully curative treatment once a tree is infected.
