A bacterial disease (Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris) that produces characteristic V shaped yellow lesions along the leaf margins of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and other brassica crops, followed by blackened veins and, in severe cases, head rot. It is seedborne and can spread rapidly through transplant production, making certified disease free seed a central plank of its management worldwide.

Black rot, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv.Tooltip pathovar campestris (Xcc), is considered the most important and most destructive disease of crucifers, infecting all cultivated varieties of brassicas worldwide. This disease was first described by botanist and entomologist Harrison Garman in Lexington, Kentucky, USA in 1889.
