Anaplasmosis

Parasitic and External Diseases of Livestock

A tick- and biting-fly-transmitted bacterial disease of cattle, caused by the rickettsial organism Anaplasma marginale, that infects and destroys red blood cells, causing severe anemia, weight loss, abortion and, particularly in cattle over two years old, death rates that can exceed 50 percent in acute outbreaks. It is endemic across tropical, subtropical and many temperate cattle-raising regions worldwide, including the southern United States, and because recovered cattle typically remain lifelong carriers capable of infecting ticks that feed on them, it is very difficult to eliminate once established in a herd or region.

  • Opening definition paragraph
Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease affecting ruminants, dogs, and horses, and is caused by Anaplasma bacteria. Anaplasmosis is an infectious but not contagious disease transmitted through mechanical and biological vector processes. Also referred to as "yellow bag" or "yellow fever" because the infected animal can develop a jaundiced look, other signs of infection include weight loss, diarrhea, paleness of the skin, aggressive behavior, and high fever.
